After tough four years that his team went through in the IPL, Shah Rukh Khan finally experienced what it felt like to be the owner of a winning team, in 2012. Led by an inspiring captain in Gautam Gambhir, the Kolkata Knight Riders gave the city of joy their share of elation.

Now, as KKR embark on the journey of defending their title, in Pepsi IPL 2013, co-owner, Shah Rukh, promises the people of Kolkata that the team will not let them down.

Here's an extract from Shah Rukh's chat with iplt20.com ahead of the Pepsi 2013 IPL Opening Nite, in Kolkata.

Cricket has been India's most popular sport for a long time. Tell us something about your early cricketing experiences – watching and playing.

I have been a cricket fan ever since I can remember. I also played the sport in my university days. It is a great sport with traditions of its own.

What is your take on the three formats of cricket?

Each format has its own sets of followers. I love all three forms. We recently beat Australia 4-0 in Tests, and of course, we are the defending champions in ODIs. T20 cricket has its own set of plusses, in that it showcases the most exciting elements of the game, in three hours.

How do you assess the past five years of IPL and how do you think the upcoming Pepsi IPL 2013 is going to fare?

The IPL was a success in its first year itself, and has only got bigger and better in later years. This process is going to continue, in the years to come.

What made you buy an IPL team?

I wanted to get involved in cricket and felt that the IPL was an exciting concept.  I guess I was justified.

Kolkata Knight Riders have been through a lot. What according to you were the factors that shaped KKR's triumph in 2012?

We were consistent right through the tournament. Gautam Gambhir led very well, and the players delivered in crunch situations. The team's interests were respected throughout. Manvinder Bisla played that great innings in the final with the legendary Jacques Kallis anchoring the chase. It was a memorable night.

If you are to pick one 'turning point' of last year's campaign, what would it be?

It is difficult to pick one 'turning point.' The team was consistent from the start, and it paid off.

The IPL has become synonymous with the term 'Cricketainment.' What according to you, does the IPL have in common, with the mainstream Hindi cinema that you have been associated with?

Excitement, suspense, tension, joy, heartbreak, and action!!!!!

Would you like to see more of your colleagues from the film industry join the IPL?

Yes. Why not!!! The more, the merrier!!!

Who will be the KKR players to watch out for in this season?

It would not be fair to name a few players. We believe in giving equal importance to every member of the side. I am sure they will deliver.

The Pepsi IPL 2013 Opening Nite is being touted as the 'grandest sporting spectacle ever seen in India.' What are going to be its highlights, and what will your role be in the same?

The Pepsi IPL 2013 Opening Nite will be a spectacular ceremony, the likes of which India has never seen before. I will be performing to some of my songs. Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone, two of my co-stars, will also be there. Pitbull, the international rapper, will thrill the audiences.

And lastly, is there anything you would like to say, to KKR fans in general, and Kolkatans in particular?

Thank you for the love and respect. We will not let you down in the Pepsi IPL 2013, we promise!

The Pepsi IPL 2013, the sixth season of what has been a phenomenon, will be played across the country, from 3 April 2013 to 26 May 2013.

The first match of the tournament, to be played between Kolkata Knight Riders, the defending champions, and Delhi Daredevils, at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Wednesday, 3 April 2013, will be preceded by the grandest sporting celebration that India has ever seen. The Pepsi IPL 2013 Opening ceremony, to be held at 7:30 pm (IST) on Tuesday, 2 April 2013, at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, one of the biggest football arenas in Asia, will feature flying drummers, Chinese percussionists, awesome fireworks, and some of the biggest film-stars in the country, including Shah Rukh Khan, the country's foremost Superstar.

The king of Bollywood and co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders will be performing at the opening ceremony, alongside his Jab Tak Hai Jaan co-star Katrina Kaif, who will be performing in Kolkata for the first time. If that is not enough, then the organizers, Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt Ltd have roped in Pitbull, the International rapper. "SRK loves the city of joy and he is already very excited to perform there. Katrina will be performing there for the first time. When Pitbull was told that he is being invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the Pepsi IPL 2013, and SRK would also be performing as well, he agreed to come within minutes," says a source.

"The Opening Ceremony of the Pepsi IPL 2013 will be as outstanding as the cricket that we will witness over the subsequent seven weeks. We are in for a spectacular commencement to what promises to be a memorable tournament," Rajeev Shukla, Chairman, IPL, said.

The IPL has gone from strength to strength since its inaugural season in 2008. It has witnessed some absorbing cricket, tremendous support from the fans, and of course, four different winners in five seasons. This is of course, an indication of the quality of cricket produced by the participating teams. Rajasthan Royals were the first champions, in 2008. Deccan Chargers won the title in 2009, when the tournament was played in South Africa. Chennai Super Kings triumphed in 2010 and 2011, and Kolkata Knight Riders scaled the summit in 2012.

The sixth season, due to begin at Kolkata's hallowed Eden Gardens on Wednesday, 3 April 2013, promises to be no different. Nine teams will battle it out in a total of 76 matches, over a period of seven weeks, and the one team that wins the contest will be crowned the Pepsi IPL 2013 champion, at the end of the final on Sunday, 26 May 2013, again at the Eden Gardens.

When it comes to wit and straightforwardness, SRK doesn't have many peers in the industry. However, this distinction will suffer a bit with the actor's recent announcement. Turns out the King Khan doesn't wish to talk about his private life anymore. At least not on public platforms like a popular microblogging site.

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan says, "I have decided that I will not talk about my private life because I often get misquoted. My quotes get used for something which are not related to me after few weeks. It hurts me as at times it involves my family."

When asked about wife Gauri, he politely declined to reply and says, "She has managed to hold my entire family together and I like that. She has done a nice job. But apart from this I won't say anything much. I have always taken everything sportingly and put forwarded my views on all issues openly. But I don't want to do that now."

Meanwhile, the uncharacteristically serious Shah Rukh even refused to reveal much about his film release date with Rohit Shetty either. "We have not fixed any date yet but we are trying to complete the shooting as soon as possible and then announce the date," SRK concludes.

To women, with love
In Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming two films, his name will appear after the leading ladies. This is something that hasn't happened before in his superstardom. It is kind of his ode to the women around him. "Fortunately my next two films, which I am also co-producing, there would not be issue. However I will make sure in my upcoming films that all my female co-stars' name will show up on the credit roll before male actors. I cannot force anyone but I will definitely try to convince them."

Shah Rukh Khan wants his 12-year-old daughter Suhana to become a film actress when she grows up.

"I hope she (Suhana) becomes an actress. I want to see her on big screen. I am proud of my daughter. I would love to see her as an actress," SRK told reporters here last night.

The superstar is often seen tweeting about his children - son Aryan and daughter Suhana - who are seen accompanying him for IPL matches.

On John Abraham's desire to direct SRK, he said, "John is really a sweet and nice guy. He is a fantastic person. He has discussed about his directorial plans and that he wants to direct me. He has it all in his head and is clear about it.

"If he has something good to offer me when he is directing it, I will do it. If the film and my role is good and if I fit in... then why not," he said.

Both SRK and John were to team up for Farah Khan's dream project 'Happy New Year'. But John could not be part of the film.

Balki and Shah Rukh Khan have joined hands for a social cause. The director recently shot a short film with the actor, and it is scheduled to release on March 8.

A source close to the director told TOI, "Balki met SRK some time back in Mumbai and discussed the subject. The script is a very sensitive one, and he wanted SRK to be the face of the project. This was followed by a string of meetings, which were kept under wraps to avoid unnecessary speculation, till such time the director managed to convince the actor."

The film deals with a current social issue but the source refused to divulge more saying, "We are not in a position to reveal the plot. It's releasing on March 8, which is Women's Day." Going by the date of release, it is likely the film deals with women's issues.

SRK has shot his part and Balki is in the process of editing it. This is their first project together but reportedly, the duo bonded well during the shoot and were overheard talking about world cinema and the French new wave.
